Tugs and Towage

M. K. Stammers' 'SHIRE ALBUM 239 - Tugs and Towage': A flash photograph to give an idea of condition.

This book outlines the history of tugs from their inception at the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present day. A tug’s main job is to tow other floating vessels. At first this was only in and out of docks and harbours. Now tugs have many more tasks including salvage, firefighting and pollution control. The biggest tugs are capable of handling huge floating structures such as oil rigs on trans-ocean voyages. Towage, whatever the era, is difficult and dangerous and depends upon the skill of the tug crews. Their small size and attractive appearance make tugs popular subjects for preservation.

M. K. stammers is in charge of Merseyside Maritime Museum, at Albert Dock, Liverpool, and is responsible for one of the largest collections in Britain. He read history at Bristol University and after graduation spent two years at the Warwick County Museum before going to Liverpool, where he became Keeper of Maritime History. He is author of several books including The Passagemakers (Teredo Press 1978), West Coast Shipping, Ship’s Figureheads, Steamboats and Historic Ships, all published by Shire.
