YOUNG SEA DOGS
THE naval midshipman has always cut an intriguing figure—certainly not a rating, yet hardly an officer: more than a youth, yet not quite a man. Recently he has been abolished, but has survived to go to sea again; though it seems unlikely that any guided missile ship of the future will possess a Gunroom, that traditional stronghold of the "Young Gentlemen".

The "mid." is sometimes looked on as a kind of cadet: Young Sea Dogs demonstrates that his training is apt to be a tough and bloody one, in war. Commander Pears tells the stories of midshipmen's exploits at sea—from Mid. Heywood in the Bounty mutiny of 1789, down to two D.S.C.'s won by midshipmen at the Battle of the River Plate.

Men who later became distinguished Admirals often had exceptionally adventurous and amusing careers as "snotties". The author therefore includes accounts of the early days at sea of Fisher, jellicoe, and Lord Charles Beresford. He also gives full accounts of such notable episodes as Mid. William Kennedy attacking eighty heavily- armed Mandarin Junks with only his own light pinnace; Mid. Hindmarsh taking the incapacitated Bellerophon out of action at the Nile; and the V.C. won by Mid Drewry, R.N.R., at the Dardanelles.

Young Sea Dogs forms an exhilarating collection of naval adventures—not solemn or too important, but gay and often heroic, as befits the sprightly age of their protagonists.
