FRONT JACKET FLAP BLURB

This meticulously researched book examines the history and evolution of battleships prior to the development of HMS Dreadnought in the early 20th century. These armed and armoured vessels represent the early evolution of the Dreadnoughts, and comprised an extremely varied and somewhat haphazard group of ships, from the early ironclads such as Gloire and Warrior to the later, larger and better armoured ships of the Erzherzog Karl class.

The Ironclads opens with the fascinating history of these ground-breaking vessels, providng vivid accounts of the battles and operations in which they played a crucial role, the commanders in charge of the ships, and the people who were instrumental in the design and technical innovations of the pre-dreadnought period.

Then there follows a detailed and comprehensive country by country directory of more than 60 of the major battleships of the era, providing in-depth and lively facts about the history, construction, appearance and function of each. Special panels provide at-a-glance information about the battleship’s statistics, including its country of origin, class, launch date, size, weight, armament, speed and performance.

Featuring more than 200 archive and museum photographs, illustrations and paintings, this riveting and enlightening reference book is a must-have for anyone interested in learning more about the vessels that played such a vital role both in the conflicts of the period and in the development and evolution of the modern battleship.
