Warships of the World: Escort Vessels
BERNARD IRELAND

This second of three volumes deals with those warships whose displacement tonnage lies between 1,000-5,000 tons, ranging from ships that carry a helicopter flight at the top end to the corvette at the lower. Unlike the first volume, Warships of the World: Major Classes, in which the two major world powers featured more noticeably, this book brings many of the world's smaller navies into view. Most notable among these are the NATO and western powers to whom a navy is necessary for defensive rather than offensive purposes. With miles of shallow coastlines Sea Control to many of these smaller nations is all about protection: of sea lanes and the merchant shipping that provide the lifelines both to their population's food requirements and industrial concerns — and with the rise in importance of North Sea oil and gas interesting problems in protection have been posed and it is in these escort vessels that the answer is provided.

To the Soviet navy Sea Control means sea denial, and mainly anti-submarine warfare to counter the west's ICBM submarines. Consequently the USSR produces larger escort vessels the majority of which carry AS and anti-surface ship weapons.

Warships of the World: Escort Vessels continues Bernard Ireland's guide for the layman in a form that omits the unclarity of jargon, and produces detail fine enough for the most questioning student of naval development. It does so with photographs for almost all the important classes and considered judgements on their fighting ability. It is a must for enthusiast, historian and modeller alike.
