When the Titanic sank on 15 April 1912 in the icy North Atlantic, the tragedy gripped newspaper headlines worldwide. This most luxurious passenger liner – on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York – was carrying a poignant cross section of society, from the rich and famous to poor emigrants searching for a better life. The public was agog.

The Titanic Disaster, based on a major collection of contemporary newspaper cuttings, gives a rare insight into the tragedy in which more than 1,500 passengers and crew died, from the moment when the news first broke right through to the findings of both the American and British Inquiries several months later. The reports, primarily from Britain's Daily Sketch and The Times, have an immediacy, pathos, and wealth of human interest that still fascinate more than 80 years later.

At first it was thought that the Titanic, earlier described as `virtually unsinkable,' could limp to port, or that there were other liners standing by to pick up the 2,358 people on board. Then the terrible truth began to emerge. Among the harrowing accounts from survivors were tributes to the British crew, `every man of them was a hero,' and to the calm of the second-class and steerage passengers. There was,
however, an account, never corroborated, of a `wild scramble among the first-class passengers,' some of whom even tried bribery to save themselves.

Newspapers, trawling for links with the tragedy, wrote about psychic warnings, the Marconi company whose wireless apparatus was used to send out the SOS calls, and six firemen alive thanks to unpunctuality – they were dismissed for arriving on board a few minutes late. A school-mate recalls `Teddy Smith,' the distinguished Titanic captain who went down with his ship, as `a brave soul as a boy, always ready to help'. There is an official denial that the Titanic crew's wages had been stopped from the moment the ship foundered, as claimed initially. Many column inches were given over to searching questions about responsibility, emotional offers of adoption, and fund- raising efforts by people from all walks of life, desperate to help. And so the coverage continues, in moving, absorbing detail.

In my illustrations I extensively use scanned images which seem to pick up and emphasize the slightest fault; many not that apparent to the nom-discerning eye; so you can better judge the condition.

If there is no illustrated wrapper I often use a montage of images and juxtapose parts to compile a representative image to promote the book. All the composite parts of these montages are un-doctored, except for perhaps an adjustment of scale, taken from 200 dpi scans.

If you feel, and I agree after we have discussed it, that my description was misleading or inaccurate then, upon the receipt of the book in the condition you received it, I will then refund all your payment plus your return postage. 

If the book isn't what you really wanted and if we agree, then, upon my receipt of the book in the condition you received it, I will then refund your bid price.

I have found, so far, that the majority of my buyers are genuine.

For my part I try and describe the books as fairly as possible - I am not a professional - and do not like buyers to feel dissatisfied. 

My Postage and Packing charges are calculated before wrapping as best I can with a very nominal amount added for packaging costs.

With the new Royal Mail UK pricing it is, dependent on the weights, often impractical (and expensive) to pack books together so multiple buys within a seven day period are posted at cost. This means that in the case of Pay Pal payers the first book is sent off for the quoted P & P charge and I either quote for the subsequent P&P minus the overspend on the first book, or if it has been paid, refund the difference.

I obtain a certificate of Proof of Posting for everything I send and this provides compensation up to 100 times the cost of a current 1st. class stamp. In the past the value could be proved by a listing from Abe books for a similar item which often took care of the postage as well. However now the Royal Mail only pay compensation equal to the successful bid price!!

Insurance can be arranged for more expensive items.
